Google Maps ‘recognises’ Donbass Rebel Republic

luganskThe Russian version of Google Maps has this week been updated to include an East Ukraine breakaway republic as a separate part of the region.

The People’s Republic of Lugansk, one of the self-proclaimed pro-Russian separatist state in Eastern Ukraine, is now listed as a separate region, between Russia and Ukraine.

News of the update was discovered and quickly shared by pro-Russian online groups, who celebrated the change as a recognition of independence. Google, however, has never taken an official political stance on the situation in Ukraine.

In 2014 Google Maps began to portray Crimea as a part of Russia, but only in Russian-language versions of the site.
