Pope speaks out against gay marriage and abortion

Pope Francis Visits SardiniaHead of the Catholic church, Pope Francis, has spoken out against gay marriage at a gathering in the Philippines.

Speaking to over 1,000 families gathered in Manila, Francis claimed that the traditional Catholic idea of family was threatened by gay marriage. He also took the opportunity to speak in support of a controversial ban on contraception that was made official guidance by the Church in the 1960s and claimed that those who criticise religion should expect reprisals.

The controversial comments disappointed many worldwide, both Catholic and non-Catholic. As head of the Catholic church Francis has been globally welcomed as a change from the norm. On topics such as LGBT issues Francis previously took a very liberal stance.

In 2013 Francis was named Time Magazine’s person of the year, after his positive influence on the Catholic church led to a change in the attitudes of thousands of Catholics.
